EVS Section Weightage & Pattern
In UP Super TET 2026 (Advt. No. 05/2026), Environmental Studies (पर्यावरण अध्ययन) carries 8 multiple-choice questions worth 24 marks (+3 marks for correct answer, -1 mark penalty for wrong answer).
Unlike UPTET where EVS combines history, geography, and polity into a 30-question omnibus paper, Super TET has distinct sections for EVS (8 Qs) and Social Studies (8 Qs). EVS here focuses strictly on ecological concepts, pollution, environmental legislation, biodiversity conservation, and Uttar Pradesh wildlife sanctuaries.
Ecosystem, Trophic Levels & 10% Energy Law
Fundamental ecological rules tested in almost every teacher recruitment paper:
- Lindeman's 10% Law of Energy Transfer (1942): Only approximately 10% of the energy entering one trophic level is transferred and incorporated into the next higher trophic level. The remaining 90% is lost as metabolic heat and respiration.
- Biomagnification: The progressive increase in concentration of non-biodegradable toxins (like DDT and mercury) at successively higher trophic levels in a food chain. Top carnivores suffer the highest toxicity.
- Ecological Pyramids:
- Pyramid of Energy: Always Upright (unidirectional flow of solar energy).
- Pyramid of Biomass: Upright in terrestrial forest ecosystems, but Inverted in aquatic/ocean ecosystems (phytoplankton biomass < zooplankton < fish).

National Parks, Biospheres & UP Sanctuaries
Uttar Pradesh-specific wildlife sanctuaries and national landmarks:
| Protected Area | District / Location | Key Significance |
|---|---|---|
Dudhwa National Park | Lakhimpur Kheri & Bahraich | Only National Park in UP; prime habitat for Swamp Deer (Barasingha) and Royal Bengal Tigers. |
Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary | Chandauli | Historic sanctuary established to conserve Asiatic Lions; rich in Rajdari and Devdari waterfalls. |
Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary (Shahid Chandra Shekhar Azad) | Unnao | Major migratory wetland stopover along Lucknow-Kanpur corridor. |
Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary | Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Amroha | Largest wildlife sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh by geographical area. |
Bakhira Bird Sanctuary | Sant Kabir Nagar | Designated Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. |

Environmental Legislation & Global Protocols
Chronology of essential environmental statutes every teacher must master:
| Statute / International Agreement | Year | Primary Mandate |
|---|---|---|
Wildlife Protection Act | 1972 | Established national parks, sanctuaries, and 6 protection schedules for fauna/flora. |
Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act | 1974 | Created the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). |
Forest (Conservation) Act | 1980 | Restricted de-reservation of state forests without central approval. |
Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act | 1981 | Regulated emissions; amended in 1987 to include noise pollution as an air pollutant. |
Environment (Protection) Act (EPA) | 1986 | Enacted under Article 253 in the immediate aftermath of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy (1984). |
Montreal Protocol | 1987 | Phasing out Ozone Depleting Substances (CFCs/Halons). |
Kyoto Protocol | 1997 | Legally binding commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (operational 2005). |

Ozone Layer, Acid Rain & Greenhouse Gases
Core atmospheric environmental science points:
- Ozone Layer (ओजोन परत): Located in the Stratosphere (समताप मंडल). Absorbs harmful solar ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation. Thickness is measured in Dobson Units (DU). World Ozone Day is celebrated annually on 16 September.
- Acid Rain (अम्लीय वर्षा): Caused primarily by Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) reacting with atmospheric moisture to form Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4) and Nitric Acid (HNO3). Causes marble cancer on monuments like the Taj Mahal in Agra.
- Primary Greenhouse Gases: Water Vapor (highest natural warming effect), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), and Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
